Laughter – An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic by Henri Bergson:
It was translated from French and whomever did it seem to have done lots of portions verbatim. The author makes laughter/comedy a science. I was very difficult for me to go through this one. See spirituality unites everything while science breaks it all down, and analyses it bit by bit. Some things don’t really need to be known.
Anyway, he really breaks it down and sheds light from angles that make you wonder. The main aspects are repetition, inversion and reciprocal interference. From those he goes into absentmindedness, objectification, predictability, mechanisation and my fav… emotion. Laughter and emotions can’t not exist together.
There were a few points I wanted to refute especially the laughter emotion one. He does have a point there and he does explain it very well. I just don’t think he’s considering emotional laughter here. Oh time has a lot to do too… like comparing past to present or future. I wouldn’t read it if I were you coz you’ll be aware of the magic and that will abate the magic. Push I think it’ll make you mechanical/stiff with your comic skills. Unless of course you have that need to know and like to discover the things I did in the book lol. Big up David for making my bus rides so taxing and so informative.
