Rough Guide To A Better World by DFID (www.roughguide-betterworld.com):
DFID stands for Department for International Development. It’s the essential guide to how the world can be a better place for its poorest inhabitants. A 96 page ‘long’ pocket sized publication that has soooooo much in it. Development and what its about, case studies, challenges, speaking and action on behalf of poor people, volunteering, making trade ethical, ethical tourism, charity and more than enough resources to it all.Few of the facts the caught my attention.
1 – Pollution from the well off countries or any others can travel as far as 8000km, which means a quarter way around the world.
2 – People in Ethiopia thought their babies were dying coz of evil spirits till they were educated on hygiene issues.
3 – Islamic principle of donating 2.5% of their income is called Zakat. I do the Christian form, which is called a Tithe (10% of your income).
4 – Whatever money you use to travel goes to someone and most of the time it should be the places you visit but multinationals with the all-inclusive package do not help. Hard to give details, in short, locals are deprived of a fair share in profits, just think of Responsible Travel.
5 – A flight from London to New York releases more carbon dioxide than an average motorist in UK does in an year. Folks even buying specific chocolate, clothes, bank accounts, taxes…. the list goes on… what you spend money on can help the less fortunate. I think everyone should read this book, which can be downloaded, read or ordered online on www.roughguide-betterworld.com.
